Form & Space

The unity of opposites:  You can view this picture as lettering on background, or foreground with lettering cut out.  There are two opposing groups here; positive and negative.  Positive elements are in the foreground and negative elements are considered the background.  Which is which?  It depends on how the viewer interprets it.

Defining Space with Horizontal Elements:
The Base Plane
This simple horizontal base plane is noted by the rug. The dog, the table and the sofa contribute to the horizontal feel we get when we view this room.

Defining Space with Vertical Linear Elements:
Parallel :
The columns in this photo define the volume of space between them.  There are 4 columns (3 are shown) so there are 4 planes involved in defining this space.

Qualities of Architectural Space-
View:
This room has an outward orientation.  Someone thought of giving consideration to an opening in this space which gives the viewer a fantastic look at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Openings in Space Defining Elements - at Corners:  This space has two openings; one on either side of this column.   These vertical openings are defined by the edges of this large column and the walls on either side of the column.
